Introducing Josmar Muñoz | Lead Front-End Developer at Pretty Technical

In this edition of Pretty Brilliant People, we sit down with Josmar Muñoz, Lead Front-End Developer at Pretty Technical. From shaping client-facing features to improving how our engineering teams collaborate and deliver at scale, Josmar plays an important role in how our platforms evolve. We spoke with him about his journey into front-end development, what motivates his approach to building technology, and how fitness keeps him motivated.

How would you describe your role at Pretty Technical to someone outside the company?

In my day-to-day work, I collaborate closely with Tech Leads and managers to shape and deliver the features our clients need. I also help ensure high code quality and continuously look for ways to improve our engineering processes.

You started programming in 2015 with C and C++. What made you fall in love with software in the first place?

I fell in love with software when I realized that tasks that might take a person hours—or even days—can be completed in seconds with code. I’ve always been a computer enthusiast, and the idea of being able to control and shape what computers can do through programming has always fascinated me.

Pretty Technical is a remote first company. What are the biggest advantages and challenges of remote engineering?

For me, the advantages clearly outweigh the challenges. Remote work saves commuting time, allows me to spend more time with my family throughout the day, and gives me the opportunity to collaborate with international teams. Of course, there are challenges like time zone and language differences, but with strong asynchronous communication and a healthy work culture, they’re absolutely manageable.

How does PT’s focus on platform ownership and long-term thinking show up in engineering?

PT’s engineering practices have evolved significantly over time, and I truly believe they’re at their best today. This approach allows the team to focus on best practices and build robust, flexible products that can be tailored to client needs and maintained long-term—while ensuring full ownership, consistent quality, and specialized support.

Fitness clearly plays a big role in your life. What got you into it, and what keeps you motivated?

I’ve been into fitness since school, when I realized how important it is for both physical and mental health. Training at the gym gives me energy and helps me unwind after a long workday. I also love activities like swimming, hiking, running, cycling, playing paddle, and more recently, hybrid training. They’re the perfect balance to spending so much time at my desk during the week.

What’s something people at work would be surprised to learn about you?

Some of my newer co-workers might not know that I’m passionate about photography and languages. I’m the go-to photographer for family and friends at special events, and I’m currently improving my French as a third language—with German and Italian next on my list.

What excites you most about the next year at Pretty Technical?

Over the past few years, I’ve mainly focused on the frontend side of our products. Looking ahead, I’m really excited to dive deeper into backend work—strengthening those skills and tackling new types of technical challenges along the way.
